Take a peek in my sketchbook + studio
Time to frame the prints!
While waiting impatiently for my calendar proofs, I’m making prints on my big beautiful archival printer to frame and have available this coming Sunday at the @smedleyyeiser Artisan Market! I’ll see you there, right? #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
2019 Birth Month Flower Calendar design is finished! I’ve ordered a proof to check printing quality, color accuracy and layout. Now I have to try to wait about a week to receive it before I can make it available to sell. Take a peek in my stories (and highlights) to see the whole calendar layout. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Flannel shirt. Hot coffee. Calendar design. How to get through a cold gray Friday morning. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Final drawing for my birth month flower calendar! September gave me the choice between asters and morning glories. I only asked one person this time around. Morning glory it is! Calendar design coming soon! #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Poppies won by a landslide over gladiolus for the August flower! These guys were super fun to draw.
This drawing took a ridiculous amount of time to finish. I started out with very simple ones and they have gotten more complex as the month is gone on. Here is July’s flower, the water lily.
Missed a day of posting for #inktober2018 because this one took a long time! So here is day 11 and 12. May’s birth month flower is the lily of the valley. Pretty and poisonous. Like me. 😸
Day 10 of #inktober2018 – I felt the need to revisit the #marigold I drew last week now that I’ve established more of a look for these drawings.
I’m listening to Marie Forleo’s podcast with Brene Brown about Brene’s new book and I had to write down this (paraphrased) quote from some role playing that they did to remind myself of this advice.
April’s birth month flower is the daisy. I don’t know why months need flowers or stones. I also don’t know why the flowers need to symbolize anything. But the daisy apparently symbolizes beauty, innocence, love and purity.
Birth month flower for March: daffodils! I can totally relate to the excitement of seeing these pretty little things popping up to tease us with the arrival of spring.
Day 7 of #inktober2018. Violets won the vote for February’s birth month flower. This one is called a halo violet.
I had a choice for January’s birth flower. It was either carnations or snowdrops.
Mums – birth flower for November. I’m going to turn these flowers into patterns, one for each month of the year – and make a calendar. What do you all think?
I’m probably not done with the mermaids, but I’m taking a break because I have another project I’m thinking about. So get used to seeing a bunch of flowers.
Got an early start on #inktober2018 late last night with this sweet mermaid. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
This time last year I drew this pretty girl. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Three days in the hospital with all the free time in the world and I mostly did nothing but sit around and wait. I did manage to start this drawing on my iPad in #procreate. Hands are hard, y’all. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Well, if you are going to be stuck in the hospital for two days getting your heart and lungs checked out, at least you can draw nude women on your iPad and eat cookies your sweet neighbors baked and delivered and the nurse will bring you milk! And you can write third person run-on sentences.
Thanks for the feature @artifats_collection!
Pretend I came up with a really clever title for this image.
Fun with about 87 apps in @melissathall’s workshop at @amandajolley’s studio.
In true suffer for your art fashion, this #sadgirl came away from today’s photo shoot with poison ivy.
Amazing fun day of shooting photos with Melissa Hall, Amanda Jolley and gorgeous model Aisa in preparation for Melissa’s workshop this weekend!
How awesome does Amanda Jolley look with the origami boat earrings I made for her on my Glowforge! With her makeup inspired by the earrings and her four year old friend.

Sundays are all about planning and trying to get organized.
Today feels like this. Please excuse the tumbleweeds. My housekeeper took the year off.
This #yblpageaday spread in @ckelso’s #brightestlifejournal is right on target for my current (ongoing) dilemma! There are so many things I want to do in my life/career/art practice that I have a really hard time choosing which one to focus on at any given moment in time. Intellectually I know that I have to chose one two main things to focus on to make real progress, but that’s so hard to do when you have so many different projects you want to work on! I know that taking one or two steps in many different directions doesn’t get you anywhere. But how do you choose? Who else has the same problem?
These were supposed to be a surprise for someone, but I have no patience for surprises, so look what I just made! The earrings, not the mug. That one is by @meaach
And a bee! #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Less than a day from plugging it in to a wearable piece of art! #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures and turn them into pretty things on my @glowforge!!!
I just fell in love, y’all! Her name is @glowforge and I want to spend every waking second with her and turn my drawings into pretty engraved objects! #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures and engrave them!
Beautiful newly configured display of my drawings, jewelry, pillows, blocks, pins and more at @ravenandmothllc! Prime location right as you walk in the door. New haircut for me too by @erileigh41, but I seem to be unable to take a decent selfie today. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Second pattern in my cocktail collection. The three olive Bloody Mary! What should be next? #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Just entered this drawing of carnivorous pitcher plants into a competition by Doodle Addicts and Adobe stock.
Just entered this drawing of carnivorous pitcher plants into a competition by @doodleaddicts and @adobestock. Voting begins September 5th, so you’ll be seeing it again! #doodleaddictsXadobestock #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
I draw so I don’t kill people.
Writing about what freedom feels like to me in @ckelso‘s beautiful #brightestlifejournal. Unsurprisingly, it includes drawing, reading, travel, coffee and no phone calls or meetings. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Don’t you hate when you are all excited about a new pattern because you drew a bunch of pretty magnolias, but the pattern just isn’t coming together at all the way you imagined?
You know that your community knows you well when even young children leave bugs on your doorstep. Thanks @kscannon and kids! 🐜 ❤️
Self portrait with magnolias. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Three olive dirty martini, please! This was so fun and a bit different for me. I’m feeling a cocktail pattern collection coming on! In the meantime, you can find some fun products with this pattern through the link in my bio. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures #threeolivemartini
This quote pulled from a video of an interview with photographer/artist @lorivrba (on her website) sums up so much of what I’m drawn to in art and the things I collect.
And now for something different… #dirtymartini
I think this #pitcherplant drawing is done. If I were smart, I would have drawn each piece separately to make it easier for me to use the individual elements in a #repeatpattern. But I’m not that smart.
This drawing popped up in my Facebook memories this morning. I drew it a year ago today in my #365accordionproject @moleskine. I still have half a sketchbook left empty from last year’s project that I need to fill. Now that I have new glasses and can see better, it’s time to get back to it! #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
Work in progress. More carnivorous plants. Still lots of coloring to do. This will become a pattern. I think a pattern collection of carnivorous plants is in the works. #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures #wip #carnivorousplants
Hi, my name is Nikki and I am a uniball signo addict. What are you addicted to? #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
New obsession: carnivorous plants. #venusflytrap #flies #insects #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures
I bought antique buffalo teeth today, what about you?
Apparently I made a lot of patterns over the past 100 days! Here are 100 little images. Probably 85 or more are completed(ish) patterns and the rest are filled in with elements that will become patterns or are patterns in progress. This is my third time doing and I...
Thanks to everyone who gave me input on this design. Sadly, I did not make it into the semifinals of the contest, but I got enough great feedback that I’m going to figure out how to make this into an actual journal and make it available for purchase...
Another cicada pattern. This started out with @smcnabstudio’s @skillshare class on creating a linear toss pattern, but then it got a crazy background.
And now for something rather different… I’m breaking my mission of #ijustwanttodrawprettypictures. Sorry about that, but it had to be done.
Thanks to everyone who voted and helped me decide! I went with this one for several reasons. First, without the strip down the left side with a pattern of staghorn ferns, I felt like it wasn’t obvious enough that I used that particular required element. And I chose...
My first attempt at a diagonal stripe pattern. I’m taking my third Skillshare class by Bonnie Christine, which is how I started learning to make in Illustrator. When I first learned more than 25 years ago at SCAD, it was by cutting and taping paper together. This is...

Another combination of Japanese anemones and staghorn ferns in preparation for the Global Talent Search
Definitely still a work in progress!
Still working on these flowers and for the Global Talent Search. They will also become part of my #100daysofpattern2018
Drawing some staghorn ferns. Lots of work to catch up after being in the mountains in Utah for the last five days!
Coffee. iPad. Sunshine. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning in Park City! Drawing more Japanese anemones for both the and my #100daysofpattern2018.
Not much time to work on my patterns this weekend while I’m in Utah for a wedding… but I got a few minutes in on this flower today.
Do you think my Uniball Signo is jealous because I’m cheating on it with my Apple Pencil?
I still love this bracelet I had my friends at @dweedlebeadles make for me!
These flowers are just one small part of another big complex pattern I have in the works, but I’m going to try to get back to posting one a day, even if it’s made of just pieces of the overall patterns I’m working on. I’m getting too caught up in the tiny details of...
I keep forgetting to go to bed. Separating elements to be used in my next #patterndesign. Lizard, mantis, leaves…not pictured, giant cicada.
Still working on and off on this one. Needs to be simplified and needs some more balance. I want the vertical lines, but there is a very strong implied horizontal line that I want to get rid of.
This little guy is going to join yesterday’s cicada in a new pattern
I’m getting this cicada giant ready to be part of a tonight. What about you?
My obsessive nature hasn’t allowed me to take a break from this one like I planned. Here, finally, is a repeat with all the leaves but just one of the women. I think I like it…but stay tuned to see the other one creep back...
Here’s what it looks like when you are building the most complicated repeat and you’ve tried and deleted 872 versions and are finally getting somewhere. Maybe.
Still working on turning this ridiculously detailed drawing into a pattern. I haven’t posted every day during the process because I don’t want to post too much of the same thing. The term sunk cost fallacy keeps popping into my mind. But I’m committed! I might take a...
Throwback (super early) Thursday to one of the first pieces I made in grad school at @scaddotedu after I switched my focus from painting to fibers. Block printed patterns inside masked off shapes form this bound figure. One of the very first repeat patterns I ever...
I’m still working on the pattern with the two women tangled in leaves, but I haven’t finished a pattern in days, so here’s a quickie with some of the elements from the more complex one to come…
When you spend several days cleaning up your scan in photoshop and then trace it in illustrator and spend several days cleaning that up and then you realize you should have scanned it a higher resolution and saved yourself hours of work over the last gazillion days!...
This sucker is taking a ridiculously long time to break into pieces that I can reassemble into a repeat. I may have to rethink it and redraw it. But my eyes have stopped working, so zzzzzzzzzzz
I got these awesome magnets made by @stickermule and now I have a chance to get a big discount on some more. What drawings of mine would you like see as magnets? If I pick your suggestion I’ll send you a pack of magnets and stickers made from my...
My drawing of the two women surrounded by leaves is taking longer than anticipated to turn into a pattern, so in the meantime, here’s a variation of my pattern from the other day.
Only got to spend a few minutes on this one today before my Apple Pencil died and I’m too tired to wait for it to recharge. Picture a pattern of leaves and vines with these two pretty women tangled up in them. That’s the plan, at least. Patterns often end up going in...
Nikki’s coworking picnic table and dog park is open for business. Free coffee. Free dog pawings. Free bugs.
Busy day today… I went to the Farmers’ Market with my favorite sister, I (almost) finished a logo, worked on an artist’s website, designed a logo and launched a new website for a new business I accidentally started with a stranger I met online in the...
Throwback Thursday to the year I made jewelry in grad school at SCAD. These two pieces were the most challenging things I’ve ever made – before or since! In front, a pendant with a full sphere that moves freely inside another cut out sphere that wraps around it....
This strawberry pattern was inspired by a dress that the fabulous @themilitantbaker was wearing in the photo I used as reference to draw her a few weeks...
Today’s pattern went through a zillion variations. Again, I don’t know which one I like. I think I’m going to have to work through the 100 days and then revisit them all and choose which ones are worth...
New little couple on my shelf this morning thanks to @jt_crawford! Check them out! They died in the throes of passion…after she ate his head, while still attached!
I ️ love Astropad so much!
Complex patterns are hard!
