Ubuntu

This was a collaborative project I worked on under the direction of French artist Corinne Spielewoy, who was an artist in residence with Paducah Arts Alliance.

Ubuntu is an African word what means, roughly, “I am what I am because of who we all are”. It is also an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people’s allegiances and relationships with each other.

Corinne assembled 12 Paducah artists to each make a piece on a slice of a tree trunk. We individually painted, carved them — or whatever — and then worked as a team to connect the different pieces together in a sculpture in the sculpture garden at Etcetera Coffeehouse.
